Can Doubts Be Right?

Self-doubt is not always wrong. Sometimes it is useful to have doubts. We cannot always be right in everything we say and do. Therefore, it is good to stop sometimes and consider what we intend to do or say. It is good to have some humility and respect for others. However, if self-doubt prevents us from expressing our opinion even when necessary or stops us from doing something meaningful, this is not good. That is when self-doubt becomes unhealthy.

Unhealthy self-doubt includes heavy inner criticism. Even small failures make us think that we are worthless in general. We begin to look at ourselves as a failure. With such an attitude, we are ready to start self-sabotaging. We think that we cannot do anything, so why bother trying at all.

At other times we have doubts about ourselves after we have begun to do something, and we start to think that we will inevitably fail. We procrastinate and delay decisions until finally, we really do fail. Then we tell ourselves again: “I knew that I would fail because I am so incapable. I am such a failure!”

Self-Doubt

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” ― Suzy Kassem

Am I good enough? Can I do this? What if I fail?

How many times have you asked yourself these or similar questions? Very few people on this Earth have never doubted themselves. It is perfectly normal not to always be sure of your abilities.

Self-doubt is so common these days. The modern media is overloading us with shiny pictures of various celebrities. They all seem to be perfect in every way. We compare ourselves with them, and often it does not go in our favor. I am not as pretty; I am not as slim; I am not as smart, etc. – that is all you can say to yourself after such comparisons.

The real question is: Who cares, and why is it important to you? When you ask yourself that question, you will find out that you are the only one who cares and that it is a crucial issue to you alone. Most other people will think that you are just fine.

Stories

Stories, myths, and legends bring benefits to humanity in at least three ways. First, stories can boost our intellectual development. Children who are being told or read stories develop their listening and speaking skills, especially if they are invited to discuss the story just told or read to them. Stories also wire our brains for collaborative thinking, strengthening our social ties. Storytelling certainly has had a significant impact on our development as a thinking species because stories build up our understanding and knowledge of the world and motivate us to develop reading and writing skills.

The Bird

It happened in ancient times. People were just waking up. A bird lit up the sky with a tail of flame and feathers of all possible colors. She was beautiful. People could see her and admire her in every corner of the world. She was in the sky for a few days and nights and then she disappeared. People have been talking about her for a long time as an unseen wonder. Over time, these stories gained more details and more and more different events and facts. In the end there was no mention of the bird at all, or perhaps, quite a bit, occasionally.

Skeptics will say that this story is about the passing of some celestial body, probably a comet, in the early days of human history, but this is a story about creating a myth. The facts of what happened do not matter. It doesn’t matter if the event took place at all. What remains in peoples’ memory is a story, a myth, or a legend. The first story being told is not meant to remain unchanged for all time. It has its life span and development. In the end, the original motif can completely disappear. What remains is a message, a lesson, a metaphor, or a parable.

“Hello, World!” or About Stories, Myths, and Legends

"If you understand, things are just as they are. If you do not understand, things are just as they are."

- Zen Proverb

In the beginning, there was a story. And then the world happened.

The Zen proverb quoted above says that whatever happens, things are going to be well. Because it is not about things at all, it is all about stories. It is people who make stories.

There is a story about eagles who must undergo a tortuous transformation by rejecting their old beaks, claws, and feathers when they are forty years old in order to survive and live for the next thirty years. Only those eagles who succeed in replacing their old "parts" within five months have the chance to live a new life.

This legend has no basis in the eagles' real lives, but it is still a beautiful metaphor about the importance of change. It is talking about how, often, in order to survive, we must begin the process of change. Sometimes old thoughts, habits, and other reminders of the past have to be put aside. We can only use the present time to set ourselves free from past bad experiences and memories. It is a story of rebirth at the time when it seems that the burden of the past is too big for us and that it is dragging us to our death. It is not the only such story. In the cultural repository of humankind, there are many similar stories, myths, and legends.
